Javanese Kampung

A kampung in the Indo-Malay world is roughly equivalent to a barrio in the Spanish world--one of those high density population neighborhoods where people typically live right on top of each other.  To elbow-room-loving Westerners it looks like a human anthill & often gets called a slum.  This is highly offensive to kampung dwellers.  Many could afford to move into roomier parts of town, but as part of their culture they choose to stay in the more communal experience of this tightly knit neighborhood where your friends & family are always nearby to help should they have any need.

This rather traditional kampung is just over a short wall from super-modern Tunjungan Plaza Mall complex in Surabaya which actually casts it's shadow over this neighborhood where most of the mall's employees live.
